Mountain Pointe in Top 25 of USA Today Football Rankings
As the Mountain Pointe High School football team prepares to defend its Division 1 state title, USA Today Sports ranks the Pride No. 21 in its Super 25 Preseason Rankings released today. Mountain Pointe is the only football team in Arizona to make the Super 25 list.
“We are honored to again be ranked in the top 25 in the nation by USA Today. We feel we have an outstanding team and will represent our school, district, and state well in the upcoming season,” said Mountain Pointe Head Coach Norris Vaughan. “Our kids work extremely hard, both in the classroom and on the field, to make our season successful.”
Coach Vaughan, who begins his sixth season as head coach, led Mountain Pointe to a 14-0 season last year. He was named 2013 State Coach of the Year by the AZ Football Coaches Association, East Valley Tribune, Arizona Cardinals, azcentral, and American Monthly Football Magazine. He was also a nominee for the NFL’s Don Shula Award.
Mountain Pointe will kick-off 2014 in the Sollenberger Classic, an annual showcase featuring top football programs from Arizona and Nevada. The Pride will play Nevada’s No. 2 team, Reed High School, on August 23rd in Las Vegas.
Azcentral Sports highlighted three 2014 Mountain Pointe matchups in its list of 25 games to watch in 2014.
